The Value of Paying for Dance

Value of Winnipeg Dance ClassesAs we move through the busy dance registration season we are often asked what the dance fees parents pay actually go towards. That is a great question! Between costumes, and tuition, dance can add up, but you want to ensure you’re getting your money’s worth. At Maples Academy of Dance, we strive to provide quality at an affordable cost. So, what do your dance fees actually go towards?

Safe Facilities

At Maples Academy of Dance, a safe facility is very important to us. Some key elements we maintain throughout the year include:

  • Proper first aid equipment, including an AED machines and a fully stocked first aid kit in case of emergency, and instructors trained in first aid who pass both criminal record checks and child abuse registry checks.
  • Our dance flooring, which helps absorb impact on a dancer’s body and creates a comfortable and safe surface to dance on.
  • Wall and portable barres to aid in the development of dance technique and skills.
  • Acro equipment for safe, injury free development of acro elements for dance.
  • Clean, clutter free floors throughout the facility.
  • Insurance to ensure the facility and everything in it is protected.

Experienced Instructors

The instructors at Maples Academy of Dance strive to provide high quality and fun dance education to their students. We work as a team to provide the best for our students. Our team consists of three levels of teachers: Senior, Junior, and Assistants (Teachers in Training).

Our Senior Teachers have multiple years of experience in both recreational and competitive dance instruction and continue to train and grow as instructors to bring the best to their students. Our senior teachers have been recognized locally and abroad for their work in dance, with many judge’s choice awards and choreography awards at competitions, but regardless of the level they teach, they strive to share their love of, and experience in dance, with all their students.

Our Junior Teachers have all gone through the 2-year Maples Academy of Dance teacher training program. They are highly trained in dance theory, technique, and choreography. The Junior teachers at Maples Academy of Dance work with our younger dancers in our recreational superstar program. They continue to grow as teachers by being mentored by our senior teachers and directors.

Our Teaching Assistants are dancers, and aspiring teachers, who are currently studying in the teacher training program at Maples Academy of Dance. The assistants work along side the junior and senior teachers to help in class, where they continue to learn the skills needed to become successful dance teachers.

Future Stars – A Program for Young Dancers

The Future Stars program at Maples Academy of Dance is designed specifically for our young dancers, age 3-6 years old. Broken down into three levels, Future Stars dancers learn in a positive and fun environment with dancers their same age. The goal of the Future Stars program is to help dancers learn age appropriate dance technique, while enhancing general movement patterns, and social and emotional development.

The syllabus for the Future Stars program was created by the Directors at Maples Academy of Dance, to ensure young dancers are taught appropriate dance technique at a level that allows dancers to learn both dance skills and basic movement skills to help in all sports or movement activities a child may take on. The Future Stars class also strives to grow a dancer’s confidence and feelings of accomplishment, while also developing creativity and social skills at a young age.

Dancers in Future Stars program take one-hour of dance each week, learning a combination of ballet, tap, and overall creative body movement.  With a balance of technical exercises, warm-up and cool down games, and choreography, the Future Stars program is an asset to the physical and cognitive development of all young dancers.

Make The Most of Your Child’s Dance Experience

As a parent, you want the best for your dancer. When you sign them up for dance classes, you want to ensure they are getting the best experience possible. As parents, you play an equally important role in the dance experience as your child and his or her teacher. Many parents ask, “What do I need to do as a dance parent?” Let’s examine a few ways you can help make your child’s dance experience a positive one.

Promote 100% Effort and Participation in Dance Class

By promoting hard work, participation, and perseverance, your child will attend their dance classes with confidence and drive. They’ll make new friends, participate fully in lessons, have more fun, and in turn, get the best dance education possible.

Be Organized for Dance Class

As a parent, if you’re organized, your child is too. When signing up for dance classes, make sure you ask about important dates to remember during the year (like recital, holiday breaks, picture day, and fee due dates), confirm class days and times, and make a list of any dress code requirements your dancer may have. Plan to get to each dance class a few minutes early so your dancer has time to get his or her shoes changed, go to the washroom before class starts, and get settled into class. Dancers who rush into class late often miss out on important announcements and valuable warm-up exercises that prepare them for the day’s exercises.

Respect

Help create a positive atmosphere by ensuring you and your dancer come to the studio with positive and respectful attitudes, and prepared to follow the dance studio’s code of conduct. Respecting teachers and Studio Directors, and other dancers and parents, helps create a positive atmosphere for everyone at dance class. Time and again we hear dancers say they love coming to dance class because their extended family is there. A respectful, positive environment helps dancers feel safe and secure, and allows them to develop their dance skills at an enhanced rate.

Remember Dance Class is FUN

It’s ok to want your dancer to be the best. A little push, and some friendly competition is a great way to help dancers succeed, especially for those who are dancing at an elite level. But it’s important to remember why every dancer started taking dance class – it was fun! As a parent, remembering that dance should be fun is a key element to your child's life-long love for dance.

Get Involved in the Studio Community

Get to know your Studio Directors, office staff, and child’s teachers. Even better, get to know the parents of your child’s dance friends. It’s a great way for you, as a parent, to develop your own dance social circle, with parents whose children share the same interests as your own. If your studio has social media like TwitterFacebook, or Instagram, follow their pages to get up to date news. Also, be sure to sign up for your studio’s enews  so you never miss a class note or announcement.

Be Proud of the Hard Work Your Dancer Puts In

It’s always exciting for a young dancer to show their parents what they’ve done in class - be it a new skill, their recital dance, or simply modeling their costume. As a parent, when you can show your dancer how proud you are of them, they feel encouraged to continue to grow and excel. Whether it is a little or big thing that your dancer is excited about, get excited with them, and always be proud of their hard work.

Remember It's Not Like TV

There are many dance TV shows that portray dance parents as bossy, mean, overly competitive, and worse! While those shows make for entertaining television, it’s not reality! Most parents in a dance studio are friendly, supportive, kind to all the students, and simply want what’s best for their child. Remind yourself, and your dancer, that while TV is entertaining, dance class is real reality and not reality TV.  Make it fun, happy, positive, and supportive for all!!

Outfitting Yourself For Dance Class

You’ve signed yourself or your child up for dance classes. Now what? It’s time to go shopping! You need dance clothes, shoes, maybe a new bag, and hair supplies. Dance fashion is its own unique industry and getting your dance wardrobe in order is one of the most anticipated “Back to Dance” activities that dancers look forward to each year.

Most dance studios in have a dress code they expect their dancers to follow. If you have a copy of that, dancewear stores can always help you find exactly what you’re looking for. Stores like Mallabar even have studio specific online stores to help you shop! All you need to do is create an account and the Maples Dance store is there for you to shop in!

Below are some things to keep in mind as you shop for dancewear.

Dance Shoes

Winnipeg Dance Studio Dance Shoe SamplesWhat colour and style of shoes do you need? For example, does your studio prefer black or beige jazz shoes? If you’re taking hip hop and the studio indicates you need indoor runners, make sure you invest in a dedicated pair of indoor runners, so you don’t bring sand and stones onto the studio floors. Do tap shoes need to be a specific brand? All these questions should be answered when you register or view the studio dress code. Typically, if a specification isn’t listed or told to you at registration, then the dance studio has no preference.

When sizing your dance shoes, you want them to fit properly. For younger dancers, it’s common for parents to want to get a pair of shoes that the dancer can grow into throughout the yeara. Unfortunately that is a bad idea as a shoe that is too big will hinder a dancer’s development and increase the risk of trips and falls during class. The last thing anyone wants is for a young dancer to get injured because they have the incorrect shoe size.

Dancewear

It’s smart to invest in a couple good pairs of dance tights (both ballet pink and beige) to last throughout the year. If your dance studio has a colour preference for body suits and other dancewear, be sure to pick up a few items that fit the requirements. Investing in good body suits, dance tops, sports bras, dance pants or shorts, and dance skirts is worth it! While there is an initial investment, high quality dancewear items last longer and are more comfortable for a dancer to wear during class..

Hair Styles

Having your hair pulled back is a requirement for almost every dance studio you go to. Take some time to learn to do a proper bun and ponytail. Invest in good hair elastics, hair nets, bobby pins, and clips to help keep your dancer’s hair secure throughout class. Don’t let “dance hair” frustrate you in the early stages. After a few classes of styling your hair you’ll be a pro who can do a bun in under 3-minutes!

Dancewear Accessories

Winnipeg Dancewear accessoriesDancers often like to top off their dance outfits with other items like leg warmers, dance sweaters, ballet skirts, and warm-up pants. These are a fun way to add your own personal style to your dance outfit. These items also make you feel good and, when it comes to leg warmers and sweaters, they keep your muscles warm as you dance, which also reduces injuries.

Finding Sales

Yes, dance shoes and clothes can be expensive. Help ease the stress on your wallet by signing up for email lists and following the social media of local dancewear stores like Harlequin and Mallabar. They often have Back to Dance sales and Year End Clearance sales to help you stock up at a fraction of the cost.

Make Your Items Last

Commit to taking good care of your dance shoes and clothes, and they’ll last a long time. Take time to hand wash more fragile items like tights and ballet skirts. Follow the washing instructions on your bodysuits, dance pants, and dance tops. Most importantly, hang-dry any shrinkable items like knitted sweaters and leg warmers. Dancewear is expensive, but durable if it's cared for properly. If you take good care of it you will get your money’s worth.

Don’t Forget…

Remember to put your dancer’s name in their shoes and keep all your dance items in a dance bag. This way your items stay together and are less likely to get lost, and if they do get lost, they are easier to identify in the lost and found!

Where Can I Buy My Dance Clothes?

For students taking dance in Winnipeg, there are a number or excellent local dancewear shops.

The Price You Pay For Dance Classes

You’ve probably all seen those articles going viral on social media, with titles like “I Don’t Pay For Sports”. They discuss the priceless benefits a child gets from participating in extracurricular activities, and guess what? They’re all true!

Dance classes Winnipeg tiny dancers watching older dancer

As children, Miss Jamie and Miss Shauna’s mom spent hours in the car, driving them to activities like dance and gymnastics. Like many dedicated and supportive parents, she paid for years of lessons and competitions. She sewed costumes, learned intricate hair styles, and was their biggest cheerleader.  Mama J, as the kids at Maples Academy of Dance so lovingly call her now, put her daughters first, spent her hard earned money on them, and never complained or questioned why she was doing it. She knew the benefits.

Dance is a family activity, and the whole family is often involved, not just the dancer.  Dance moms, dads, and grandparents (and sometime even siblings) become dance financiers, chauffeurs, hair stylists, seamstresses, and cheerleaders. Like Mama J did years ago, Maples Academy of Dance parents do so much for their young dancers, to help them shine on stage. In doing so, the rewards come in many shapes and sizes, like smiles, hugs, good report cards, improved confidence, and watching your dancer shine more and more each year.

Dance school Winnipeg dancers having funLike the viral social media articles claim, as dance parents you aren’t paying for dance. You’re paying for your child to have opportunities, build confidence, and experience the feeling of being part of a team. You're paying for physical fitness, a creative outlet, and lessons in time management, accountability, and responsibility. You’re investing in the physical and emotional well-being of your child, and encouraging him or her to participate in an activity that makes them happy. You’re teaching them dedication and determination, and how to be grateful for the gift of dance that you give them each year.

To all of our wonderful dance parents, we thank you for supporting your dancers on their journey. They may still be young and not realize all you do to make dance possible for them, but one day they will, and they will thank you. And hopefully, they’ll do the same for their kids in the future!

Three cheers for great dance parents, who in turn help create talented, passionate dancers! Your kids couldn’t do it without you.

Dance Classes Offer More than Just Physical Activity

Dance Classes Offer More than Just Physical Activity

Dance classes are a common first activity for young children. Some dance parents often register their children for dance class as a way to give them a fun physical activity to participate in. Others choose dance as an activity that will help their children learn social skills and independence.

Yes, dance is a great physical activity, that teaches balance, coordination, and flexibility, for both boys and girls. And yes, dance teaches team work, independence, time management, and social skills. But what is it about dance class that keeps kids coming back year after year and creates a life-long love for dance?

Life-long Friendships

Winnipeg Dance students backstageWe have a large group of dancers who started dancing with us when they were 5-years-old. They’re now 12. For the most part, they've been in the same classes since they were five. Recently, one of them posted a photo on Instagram with the caption that said “Friends that dance together, stay together”. That couldn’t be more true! Many dancers start their first class together, and if they stick with dance, they dance together for their whole dance-lives. These dancers are true friends who encourage and support each other. While they have a healthy competition among themselves, they also celebrate each other’s wins, and are always there with a hug when someone is having a bad day. The friendships that dancers make with each other are like no other and truly do last a lifetime.

Dance Class Instills a Sense of Pride

Winnipeg Dance students huddle backstageDancers of all levels take pride in their performances. It’s the pride in their hard work that drives them to continue to learn more and perform better each year. A dance mom told us a story once. Her 4-year-old was watching her previous year’s recital DVD. The young dancer looked at her mom and exclaimed “Oh Mommy, I dance way better now!”. The little girl could see how much she’d improved from age three to age four, and was so excited about her improvements that she couldn’t contain her pride.

Encouragement and Motivation to Excel

Dance teachers encourage and motivate dancers to accomplish their goals. They teach their students to set bigger and better goals each year, and help their dancers find the drive within themselves to succeed. Motivated dance teachers share their excitement with their students in class and at performances. This same excitement and motivation helps dancers focus and excel, and builds a level of confidence that lasts a lifetime.

Feelings of Accomplishment

Winnipeg Dance students celebrate at dance competitionSuccess. Everyone loves the feeling of success. Succeeding at something you’ve worked hard on builds confidence and teaches the lesson that hard work pays off. For a dancer, sometimes a little win, like improved flexibility, is all it takes to make them feel accomplished. Sometimes, it’s a big win, like performing on stage for the first time at a dance competition. Big or small, the feelings of accomplishment a dancer experiences is one of the most valuable things a dancer can experience!

These are just a handful of the benefits dance offers. When you combine the physical benefits with the emotional benefits, and the skills dance teachers, it creates the perfect recipe for dancers to become strong, dedicated, responsible, confident, and happy people.

Find A Dance Studio Winnipeg Dancers Love

Picking a dance studio, or switching to a new dance studio, can be tough. If you type Dance Studio Winnipeg into your online search engine, so many options pop up! It can be confusing and intimidating. Dance is supposed to be fun, so picking a good dance studio shouldn’t be a negative experience, and it won’t be if you are prepared with the knowledge needed to pick the best place for you!

Basic Dance Studio Information

As you’re searching for a new studio, it’s important to gather the basic information. Stuff like location, hours of operation, social media pages, and teachers can help you get a general understanding of the studio. While surfing a dance studio’s website, or phoning around to ask questions, it’s important to consider the following to help you get a better understanding of the studio:

Is the location close to home? Does it have parking and is it close to bus routes?
Do the hours of operation work with your schedule?
Who are the teachers? Are the experienced?
What’s on the social pages? Do the pictures and videos make you want to join? Is the vibe of the page upbeat and encouraging?
Can you come for a tour?

When shopping around for a dance studio Winnipeg dancers and parents should always pick a place that lines up with their values and goals, so the above questions help set a baseline in the search.

Dance Classes

For young dancers, there are usually only a couple of options (usually ballet and tap, or a form or creative movement), but once a child hits age 7, dance opportunities are a lot greater. When you’re searching, keep in mind the styles you want to register for, and see if the studio can offer what you need.

It’s always important to ask about levels and age groupings. If you have a 12-year-old child who is at a beginner level, is he or she going to be in a class with 7-year-olds, or does the studio offer beginner teen classes for your dancer? A good dance studio will have a variety of levels and age groups to pick from. If your dancer is dancing at a higher level, you may want to ask about the studio’s competitive dance programming, or see if your dancer can be evaluated to ensure you are registering for the appropriate level.

Class sizes are also important. Some places pack a class full of thirty 3-year-olds. That is a lot at that age! If the class sizes seem large, ask how many teachers are in the room with the children. Some studios have large classes, but have multiple teachers and student assistants in class. When looking at class sizes, you want to ensure your dancer isn’t getting lost in the shuffle. After all, you’re paying for your child to learn to dance, not fade away into the back of the room, unnoticed.

Policies

When looking at a dance studio Winnipeg parents and dancers should also be mindful of the studio policies. Are there drop-out policies if a dancer decides she doesn't like it? We know with young children, one day they want to be a dancer, the next they want to be an astronaut! And sometimes, sadly, dance simply isn't what a child expected, so you'll want to know if there is a fee penalty if you drop out, and if any refunds are given for registration fees, costume fees, unused pre-paid class fees, etc.

Dress codes are also often enforced, but all dance studios enforce different dress codes. You’ll want to ensure you know of any colour, style, and brand requirements, or restrictions, for dancewear, shoes, and hair styles.

Many dance studios also have a Code of Conduct  the studio expects all staff, parents, and dancers to follow. If you see the Code of Conduct, ask yourself if it aligns with your beliefs and if it is easy to follow. If it seems unreasonable or you don’t align with it, then the studio you’re researching probably isn’t the best choice for you.

Recital Information

Dance studio winnipeg dancers at their recitalAll studios run recitals differently, but the key point is that you get to see your child perform what he or she has learned throughout the year. Ask questions about date(s) and location of the recital, and if there are videos or pictures from past recitals you can see. This helps you set expectations for the year end, and determine what type of learning outcomes are realistic for your dancer. It also allows you to plan early for recital, and ensure you can bring your dancer's fan club to cheer him or her on at recital.

Yes, this is a lot of information, but as you go through the process of finding a dance studio, you’ll know if a studio is right for you. If you narrow it down to a list of two or three places, always go in to tour the studio and meet the directors. Being in the studio will always help you to determine if it’s the right place for you.

Dance Lessons Winnipeg Children Can Benefit from Most

Becoming part of the dance community in Winnipeg can be fun, but also a bit confusing. When choosing dance lessons Winnipeg parents can face many unknowns throughout the registration process. There are so many styles of dance to pick from, and different age and skill levels. Then there is the choice between competitive or recreational dance programs. So what does it all mean? Hopefully we can help to decode it!

Styles of Dance

This is the best place to start. Choosing a style of dance for your child is extremely important. Do you have a child who loves to pretend to fly and sparkle around the room like Tinkerbell? Ballet is a good class to start with. What about a child who can’t stop tapping his or her toes to the beat of the music in the car? Tap class will be a perfect fit. Styles like Jazz and Hip Hop offer a more upbeat solution for the high energy dancer. With so many styles to choose from, you’ll have a lot of great options for your dancer at registration.

Ages and Levels

Most dance studios will offer dance lessons for a variety of age groupings and levels, to ensure students can learn at a pace that helps them grow and succeed. Typically, age groupings will keep children of similar ages in a group together, allowing for positive friendships and emotional development to occur, along with their dance training. Is your dancer new to dance? Likely he or she will go into a beginner or all levels recreational dance program, versus a dancer who has years of experience at an elite level.

Recreational Dance Programming

Most new dancers come into their first dance lesson at a recreational level. Recreational dance lessons in Winnipeg allow dancers to learn at a more relaxed and modest pace. With that said, a good recreational program should also still challenge students and push them to progress throughout the length of the program. Many dancers choose to remain at a recreational level their whole lives. This is for many reasons, but for most, it’s because they simply love dance as an activity, but do not wish to pursue it at an elite level.

Competitive Dance Team

Dance lessons winnipeg dancer succeed at dance competitionsIt’s very common for dancers who dance at an elite level to be invited to a competitive team. Often called Competition Teams or Performance Teams, dancers at this level take lessons in a variety of styles, dancing multiple days during the week for longer duration. Teams are often selected by invitation or audition and require an high level of training and dedication. Elite dancers on Teams are required to commit to a number of extra practices and performances throughout the year. These programs will almost always have extra costs attached to them as well. Costs include extra costumes, registration fees for competitions, choreography or extra classes, and team outfits. This level of dance also requires extra family support and dancer/family commitment, as the elite schedules tend to be busier, and their training is much more intense.

Ask to Be Evaluated

Not sure where your dancer fits? Before registering for dance lessons Winnipeg studios can provide evaluations of a dancer. These short testing classes will help the studio Director figure out the appropriate level and style for a dancer. Evaluations are great for first time students, but also for dancers who are moving from one studio to another, as studios set different standards for their levels and programs.  Regardless if you’re a new or returning dancer, evaluations are a great way to ensure you’re in the right level for your dance lessons.

Ask Questions

Still not sure? Ask questions. Dance studio staff are a wealth of knowledge when it comes to placing a dancer in an appropriate level or style of dance. At registration, don't be afraid to come with a list of questions for staff to answer for you. It benefits everyone as a whole when dancers are placed in the proper classes.

Why You Should Choose Summer Dance Camps

For new dancers, summer dance classes are a great way to try dance for the first time. For experienced dancers, summer dance classes are a great time to try a new style of dance or keep progressing in a current style they already take. Picking the Right Dance Camp

You know your child best. Has your dancer been twirling around the living room yelling out “I’m a ballerina”? If that’s the case, a hip hop camp probably isn’t the best plan! Look for camps that align with your dancer’s age, personality, and interests. When finding dance classes Winnipeg dancers will enjoy and thrive in, look for a camp that offers some variety for your dancer as well. The more variety in a summer dance program, the more exposure your dancer will have to dance in general. This helps your dancer understand his or her abilities and pick some favourite styles in the future. This makes it easier for you to register for fall classes if they wish to continue dancing past summer.
